  Grace

by Hugh Ross, Ph.D.

Grace is the love of God freely and fully bestowed on guilty sinners without regard to any merit of their own and in spite of any demerit. It is God showing His perfect goodness to those who have no legitimate reason to expect anything but severity.

"This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Him as a sacrifice, as the One who would turn aside His wrath, taking away sin, through faith in His blood" (Rom. 3:22--25).Grace does not depend on the recipient. It lies wholly in the giver, in God. Grace does not help--it does all!Grace is bestowed on all who: 1) are convinced that Jesus is the Messiah, the One who died for all their sins (past, present, and future) and rose bodily from the dead; 2) have invited Jesus to take complete control of their lives; and 3) are ready to confess Him as their personal Lord and Savior. This is what is meant by being "under grace" or "in Christ." Those under grace are not on probation--they will never be asked to answer for their sins. Grace, once bestowed, can never be withdrawn (Rom. 8:32-39). The flow of grace depends only on one's belief that it is available without measure and on one's consent to be loved while unworthy. Under grace there is no real reason to be discouraged, for discouragement comes from a failure to trust God's purpose and plan of blessing; there is no real reason to be disappointed, for disappointment comes from having believed in self rather than in God; and there is no real reason to be proud, for no one can stand before God on his or her own merit.Grace Is LimitlessWhen we are in Christ, we:

  1. have Christ with us always, never to forsake us--even to the end of the age (Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5).
